Gwen Smith

Web Mistress

Gwendolyn Ann Smith is a web developer, a writer, and an activist, though not necessarily in that order.

Starting on the Internet when the World Wide Web was in its infancy, Gwen formed the one of the first major Internet resources on America Online for the transgender community, called the Transgender Community Forum. This eventually evolved into the Gay.com’s Transgender Gazebo — the premiere transgender area on all of Gay.com.

She also has served as webmistress for Loren Cameron’s two websites, Online Alchemy and Man Tool, as well as Gender.org. At the latter site she hosts her web project, Remembering Our Dead, which was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award in 1999.

Gwen also serves as a regular columnist, writing her Transmissions columns for the Bay Area Reporter and the Philadelphia Gay News. Her writing has also appeared in several publications and web sites, from Transgender Tapestry to PenthouseFetish.com.

Activism-wise, Gwen can be found serving on the Transgender Civil Rights Implementation Task Force and on the Board for Gender Education and Advocacy. She started planning and implementing protests in High School, and continues to this day, helping to organize the multi-city Day of Remembrance each November.

In her spare time — what little there is — Gwen can be found restoring her 1964 Rambler.
